Is it worth replacing my boiler?
Boilers account for about 60% of what you spend in a year on energy bills, the Energy Savings Trust says, so an efficient boiler makes a BIG difference.
Replacing an old gas boiler with an A-rated high-efficiency condensing boiler will significantly cut your home's carbon dioxide emissions - and could save you as much as £300 a year (alongside tightening your heating controls, the Trust says).
Modern boilers are more efficient for several reasons, but their main advantage is that they are all condensing boilers. All well-maintained boilers burn their fuel very efficiently, but they inevitably lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue. A condensing boiler has a bigger heat exchanger, so it recovers more heat, sends cooler gases up the flue and is more efficient. In terms of boiler brands, RCB Plumbing recommends B axi, Worcester Bosch and Valiant.
Can I control heating bills better?
Yes, you probably can! Start by turning your thermostat down by 1°C because you could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent by this small change! That equate to a typical saving of about £60 a year. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time. As a general guideline for water, your cylinder thermostat should be set at 60°C/140°F.
Is servicing less important now that I tightly control the heating?
Keeping a close watch of the thermostat and replacing your boiler (general rule is ‘the newer the better’) are important steps to saving energy at home. But either move is no substitute for having your boiler and other gas appliances reviewed regularly by a Gas Safe Accredited heating engineer. Regular servicing of a boiler helps to extend its lifetime and can head off a premature and potentially costly death!
How can a Powerflush help me energy-save?
To remove sludge, limescale and other impurities that build-up inside your heating system, we use what’s known as a Powerflushing solution.
This entails flushing through your system with a chemical base. The process is clean and makes no mess, the radiators do not have to be removed and minimal disturbance is caused.
When completed your system will be running again on clean water and you should notice more efficiency and much less noise from your boiler. Your fuel bills should also reduce (by up to 25%)
Can I do anything small, or right away, to save energy?
Doing nothing about a single dripping hot water tap isn’t easy because of how irritating it can be! But if you do succeed in ignoring it, you’ll wish you hadn’t because such a tap wastes enough hot water in one week to fill half a bath! So sooner rather than later talk to RCB Plumbing about us fixing any leaking taps you have, while making sure that all the other taps around your property are fully turned off!
